Life After Matric: What's Next for Namibian Youth?
Graduating high school is exciting, but it can also be scary. Many young Namibians ask the same question: “What’s next for me?”Some choose university. In Windhoek, UNAM and NUST are buzzing with new students, each chasing a dream. For some, it’s about following passion, like studying journalism, medicine, or IT. For others, it’s the promise of stability. But not everyone has the money or access to go straight to university.
That’s where vocational training steps in. Centers like NIMT and Okakarara VTC are producing skilled welders, electricians, and plumbers. These jobs are in high demand, and they prove that success doesn’t always wear a suit.
Then there are young people diving straight into entrepreneurship. In Katutura, some run small clothing brands, food stalls, or social media businesses. One 20-year-old I spoke to sells thrifted clothes online and earns enough to help her family.
And yes, gap years are also real. Some take a break to figure things out, save money, or volunteer. It’s not “wasting time”. It’s building experience.
👉 The truth is: there’s no one right path after matric. What matters is making choices that align with your reality, your dreams, and your growth.
